the charts below show the results of a questionnaire that asked visitors to the parkway hotel how they rated the hotel's customer service. the same questionnaire was given to 100 guests in the years 2005 and 2010.

the pie charts compare visitorssquo; responses to a survey about customer service at the parkway hotel in 2005 and in 2010.

it is clear that overall customer satisfaction increased considerably from 2005 to 2010. while most hotel guests rated customer service as satisfactory or poor in 2005, a clear majority described the hotelsquo;s service as good or excellent in 2010.

looking at the positive responses first, in 2005 only 5% of the hotelsquo;s visitors rated its customer service as excellent, but this figure rose to 28% in 2010. furthermore, while only 14% of guests described customer service in the hotel as good in 2005, almost three times as many people gave this rating five years later.

with regard to negative feedback, the proportion of guests who considered the hotelsquo;s customer service to be poor fell from 21% in 2005 to only 12% in 2010. similarly, the proportion of people who thought customer service was very poor dropped from 15% to only 4% over the 5-year period. finally, a fall in the number of squo;satisfactorysquo; ratings in 2010 reflects the fact that more people gave positive responses to the survey in that year.

the charts compare the sources of electricity in australia and france in the years 1980 and 2000. during these years electricity production almost doubled, rising from 100 units to 170 in australia, and from 90 to 180 units in france.

in 1980 australia used coal as the main electricity source (50 units) and the remainder was produced from natural gas, hydro power (each producing 20 units) and oil (which produced only 10 units). by 2000, coal had become the fuel for more than 75% of electricity produced and only hydro power continued to be another significant source supplying approximately 20%.

in contrast, france used coal as a source for only 25 units of electricity in 1980, which was matched by natural gas. the remaining 40 units were produced largely from oil and nuclear power, with hydro power contributing only 5 units. but by 2000 nuclear power, which was not used at all in australia, had developed into the main source, producing almost 75% of electricity, at 126 units, while coal and oil together produced only 50 units. other sources were no longer significant.

overall, it is clear that by 2000 these two countries relied on different principal fuel sources: australia relied on coal and france on nuclear power.

what are the causes for losing varieties in languages and cultures?

every human society has a culture that includes arts, customs, language, etc. every culture changes and the main causes for losing varieties in language and culture, in my opinion, are: contact with other cultures, and development of science and technology.

when two cultures have continuous contact with each other, the two cultures may blend or adopt their cultural traits, such as language, clothing, etc. thus losing their individual cultural varieties. when people of one culture who move to a country where another culture dominates may give up their old ways and become part of the dominant culture. for example, groups of people from many countries have settled in the united states. most of these people gradually abandoned the way of life of their homeland, and adopted an american way of life. they learned the language, adopted the customs, and followed the traditions.

the development of science and technology, on the other hand, may attribute to changes in a culture. the invention of steam engine, for example, produced great changes in the way people lived. the invention of the computer in the mid 20th century has also had enormous impact. it has brought far-reaching changes in communication, education, entertainment, and numerous other areas of modern life.

in conclusion, to lose varieties in language and culture is to lose richness in them. therefore, to my mind, multiculturalism should prevail in the contemporary world, so that ethnic groups can bring variety and richness to a society by introducing their own ideas and customs.

traveling is a good way to find out more about different countries with different traditions and customs. some travelers prefer to spend in one country just a few days or one day and then leave for another country. this way of traveling allows people to visit more countries in fewer days. unfortunately, in this case such travelers have to hurry in order to visit more places.

i am from saint-petersburg, russia. so, if a foreign visitor has only one day to spend in my country i think i would advice him to visit the "hermitage" - the most well known and amazing museum in russia. the "hermitage" has 3 floors and more then 100 halls. it is really amazing to visit that place. many people from all over the world every day enter its walls. some of the rooms devoted to the history of other countries. others devoted to the art of a famous painter and the history of his life. however, most of the halls conclude many things such as paintings, royal belongings, sculptures from russian history.

some people say that it is impossible to feel deeply and see all these amazing historical values for one visit. i have to completely agree with this statement. when i first visited the "hermitage" i was 14 years old. it impressed me so much that i was back next day to see what i had not been able to see the day before.

the "hermitage" is an impressive and beautiful museum. i think it is worth to spend there a whole day and i believe that after that a foreign visitor can claim with a proud that he or she saw russia.

the advancement of modern technology is making peoples life more comfortable and at the same time less human. to those who enjoy the benefits of technology, there is no better time to be alive than now, but to others life has been increasingly complex and stressful. the issue is whether such new technological machines as computers and the internet would be our servants forever or eventually could become our masters.

all kinds of inventions made possible by technology are designed to be the slaves of human beings, if human beings are not to be slaved by machines. once upon a time, we were plain people, but that was before we began having relationships with technological systems. by getting involved with computerized machines, we could not help changing the way we live and the way we work, for better or for worse it can be realized that life is more complex because much of modern technology is not born to meet primary human needs, and many unnecessary inventions are producing negative effects on a living style that used to be relatively simple. thus, there is an overwhelming feeling of complexity in the sense that machines act like humans and humans act like machines. now that intelligent machines such as robots are widely applied to take the place of human beings because they are capable of doing many useful jobs, although making many people joblesss. those who cannot work with computers are disadvantaged and therefore helpless while the traditional skills and simple ways of life are fading away, never to return again.
